"Stefania Boiano explores the gripping situation of Italy, her home Country, known worldwide as a treasure chest of beauty and nowadays on the verge of moral and material collapse. The dramatic contrast between the glorious past and the present decline is represented by female figures recalling Roman and Greek classical statues distorted in a struggle against tying and stifling drapes. The harshness of black and white, the absence of the renowned Italian postcard-like colours, the vanishing of classical lines against a hopeless dark background, everything conveys her sadness for her Country, so important and yet so neglected.
The artworks’ titles are excerpts from the Italian national anthem. Out of their usual context, these words lose their rhetorical status, gaining new and unexpected meanings. Esperia, the ancient Greek name of Italy meaning the ‘land of the setting sun’, gives its name to the whole series suggesting the idea of decline.
The choice of pastels conveys an extra layer of meaning: the vulnerability of the pure pigment requires particular attention to be preserved, thus resembling the fragility of the immense Italian heritage, as dramatically highlighted by the recent collapse of a Roman building in Pompei."

Stefania Boiano esplora la lacerante situazione del suo paese natale, l’Italia, scrigno mondiale di bellezza e oggi sull’orlo del totale collasso morale e materiale. Il drammatico contrasto tra la gloria del passato e l’attuale degrado e’ rappresentato dalla distorsione di figure femminili ispirate a sculture greco-romane, che abbandonano la tradizionale compostezza classica per contorcersi e dibattersi nelle vesti che sembrano prendere vita, cingendole e soffocandole. La durezza del bianco e nero, l’assenza dei colori da cartolina per cui l’Italia e’ celebrata nel mondo, la bellezza classica delle linee che si sfaldano in uno sfondo oscuro che non lascia speranza, tutto esprime lo sgomento per questa terra cosi’ importante e trascurata al tempo stesso.
I titoli delle opere sono frasi tratte dall’inno nazionale italiano, che isolate dal consueto contesto perdono ogni retorica ed assumono nuovi e inaspettati significati, lasciati alla meditazione dello spettatore. Esperia, o Terra del Tramonto, come gli antichi Greci chiamavano l'Italia, dà il nome all'intera serie di opere per suggerire l'idea del declino.
Anche la scelta tecnica del pastello su tavola ha un preciso significato. Infatti la delicatezza del pigmento puro del pastello, che impone particolare attenzione nel trasporto e nella conservazione, simboleggia la fragilità dell’immenso patrimonio artistico italiano, come i recenti crolli a Pompei hanno drammaticamente ricordato.
